Summer Use Restrictions for Continuing Students
Each service has different rules for continuing
usage if you qualify for an extension. Loislaw has no blackout period over the
summer. (Also see Academic Use Restrictions for Lexis and Westlaw below.)
Lexis:
Lexis offers extended summer access to continuing students who register their IDs by May 31, 2009 for the following reasons:
Summer School;
School-Related Research Assignment;
Moot Court Research;
Law Review or Journal Research;
Working as a Professor's Research Assistant;
Unpaid Internship/Externship including clerkship or clinical, as long as for credit
Research for Grant or Scholarship
You can register for an extension, which allows you full access through August 1,
2009. For extended access, go to www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool,
log on, and click on the summer access information link under the Announcements heading. Review the reasons for requesting an extension and click Register for Summer Access.
If you take no action, your account will be limited to Career information as of June 1, 2009.
Loislaw
This computer-assisted legal research system has no blackout period over the
summer, but it does require registration using a Special Access Code.
To find the access code from a non-Law School
network computer, go to the Subscription Database
page; click on "special access code" next to Loislaw, and use the same login that you would use on computers on the Law School
network. Loislaw includes statutes, administrative code, court rules and cases
for state and federal jurisdictions and more.
Westlaw
Westlaw passwords will remain active over the summer for up to two hours of research
in June and in July.
Students can extend access to full access over the summer if they have a valid
educational need under one of the following provisions:
taking summer classes;
law review member;
moot court member;
faculty research assistant; and
unpaid non-profit public interest internship/externship or pro bono work required for graduation.
(Courts and government agencies are not non-profit or public interest entities, therefore students with unpaid internships or externships are not eligible for the extension. Students
who are provided stipends, grants or funding by their schools or organizations for non-profit work over the summer are receiving compensation and are not eligible for a summer
password extension.)
For full access, register at http://www.lawschool.westlaw.com.
Log into Westlaw and look for the image that says "Need your Westlaw password this summer?" and click on the button that says "Go."
By the way, Live Help will be suspended for law school passwords on May 23rd and will resume service on August 1.
Subscription Databases
Continuing law students have off-campus access to the law libraries' subscription
databases. A comprehensive list is available on the Subscription Database
page. Once a student clicks on a database listed on the page above, he/she will be prompted
to log-in. The user name and password are the same as the ones used to log into the law
school network.
Additional Assistance
Lexis:
Lexis offers extended summer usage for graduating students for the following reasons:
Bar Review
For extended access, go to www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool, log on, click on the summer access
information link under the Announcements heading, and click Register for Summer Access. You must register by May 31, 2009. If you take no action, your account will be
limited to Career information as of June 1, 2009. Extended or not, all graduating students IDs will expire on August 1, 2009.
Usage is still restricted to educational purposes only as described below.
Loislaw:
Graduating students have access to Loislaw for six months after graduation. It
does require registration using a Special Access Code.
To find the access code from a non-Law School
network computer, go to the Subscription Database
page; click on "special access code" next to Loislaw, and use the same login that you would use on computers on the Law School
network. Loislaw includes statutes, administrative code, court rules and cases for
state and federal jurisdictions and more.
Westlaw:
Westlaw is offering graduating students an extra 10 hours of Westlaw access (5 hours in June and 5 hours in July) to help prepare for the bar. Graduate access will
expire on July 31, 2009 or after using the allotted hours whichever comes first.
Graduating students should have received an email from Westlaw allowing them to sign-up for the extension. If you did not receive this email and you are interested
in the Westlaw summer access, log into Westlaw, and look for the image on the right side of the page that says
"Need your Westlaw password this summer?" Click on the "Go" button, and follow the instructions from there.
